Crawl Space Drainage Matting in Maryland

Not every crawl space water problem shows up as a pool at one low spot. Some crawl space floors see moisture seeping across the surface more broadly, and a vapor barrier laid directly over that ground traps it underneath instead of managing it. Drainage matting solves that specific condition.

What Drainage Matting Is and When It's Used

Drainage matting is a raised, channeled underlayment installed beneath the vapor barrier. Rather than the liner sitting flush against damp soil, the matting creates a network of small channels underneath it, giving sheet moisture, ground moisture spread evenly across the crawl space floor rather than collected at a single low point, somewhere to travel toward the drainage system instead of building up under the liner where it can't evaporate or drain away on its own.

This is different from the situation our interior perimeter drainage addresses, active water entering through the wall or floor at a specific point, and different from what a surface drain catches, water collecting in the yard before it reaches the foundation. Drainage matting is specifically for widespread, low-volume moisture across the floor surface itself.

How OBW Installs Drainage Matting

  • Full floor coverage, matting is laid across the entire crawl space floor before the vapor barrier goes down, not just the areas that look damp today
  • Tied into the drainage system, channels are directed toward the perimeter drainage or sump location so collected moisture has an actual path out
  • Vapor barrier installed over the matting, sealed and terminated at the walls the same way it would be over bare soil, so the liner's own seal isn't compromised by the matting beneath it

Drainage matting is typically added when a repair or encapsulation inspection finds persistent dampness across the floor surface rather than at one identifiable entry point. Every installation is backed by a written workmanship guarantee. Ask your inspector for the terms that apply to your job.
