Crawl Space Doors for Maryland Homes

In a sealed crawl space, the access door is part of the thermal and vapor envelope, not an afterthought. OBW installs insulated, properly sealed crawl space doors that maintain the integrity of the encapsulation system while providing the access needed for inspection and maintenance.

The Problem with Standard Crawl Space Hatches

The typical crawl space access door found in older Maryland homes is a piece of plywood, a salvaged hollow-core door, or a basic plastic panel, none of which are insulated, weather-stripped, or designed to form an air seal. In a vented crawl space, this is a minor concern. In a sealed, conditioned crawl space, it's a significant gap in the system. Warm humid air in summer and cold dry air in winter freely exchange through a poorly sealed door, undermining the vapor barrier, dehumidifier, and vent sealing work that makes the encapsulation effective.

OBW's Crawl Space Door Installations

  • Interior access doors, for homes where the crawl space is accessed from inside (closet floor, utility room hatch); rigid foam-core panel with perimeter weather stripping and positive-latching hardware
  • Exterior access doors, for foundation wall access points; insulated panel with weather stripping, corrosion-resistant hardware, and secure latch
  • Framing assessment and repair, deteriorated access framing is rebuilt to provide a square, solid substrate for the new door
  • Vapor barrier integration, liner terminates correctly at the door frame without gaps or exposed edges

Part of the Complete Encapsulation System

OBW includes a properly specified access door in every encapsulation installation. The door is not an add-on, it's a required component of a properly sealed crawl space. Our workmanship guarantee covers the complete system, including the access door. If you're replacing an existing inadequate hatch or adding a new access point as part of a waterproofing project, OBW handles it as part of the encapsulation scope.
