Where a Vapor Barrier Fits in a Waterproofing Solution
A vapor barrier addresses a different problem than a drainage system does. Drainage handles water that's actively moving, at the cove joint or through a crack. A vapor barrier addresses moisture vapor that migrates through the wall itself even when there's no visible seepage, the reason a basement can feel damp and smell musty without ever showing standing water. Basements being finished into living space especially need this addressed first, since drywall and framing installed over an untreated wall will absorb that moisture and eventually show it.
What Goes Into a Properly Installed Barrier
